Today is a day that people enjoy talking about government and issues as such because of a folk hero of V from V from Vendetta (and hell I have done that in the past) but I want to take a step back and look at what would have happened if Guy Fawkes actually succeeded at what he was fighting for. It was a fight about religion not politics. Now people forget about the religious aspect but it was there and no Fawkes did not fight against an oppressive religion to free people from it, it was just to replace it with his.
Yes this will upset some people who have rallied behind V but V is not Fawkes, so how about we look at them as two different ideas.
V I like, hell I've cosplayed him on many occasions, V in the movie stands against government, V from the graphic novel by Alan Moore, is an anarchist. To me V would be fighting against what Fawkes wanted, though the erection of the Catholic Theocracy from the Church of England (Cake or Death?). I am not saying that we should destroy a faith (that is for another time) but I am just asking for people to remember what really happened.
This is what happens with all holidays though, look at my favorite Halloween, it went from a thinning of the veil of Samhain to a time for girls to dress like sluts because they can. Thus remember remember the truth behind anything you hear.
But that does not mean you cannot enjoy what it has become.
